Software Engineer - CloudOps
Own the systems behind smarter farming. Build, fix, and scale eShepherd’s cloud platform
We usually respond within a week
Why Join Us
At eShepherd, we’re transforming livestock management with smart virtual fencing technology that gives farmers and ranchers more freedom, flexibility, and insight. Our mission is simple: make farming easier, more sustainable, and more productive - without compromise.
We’re in a high-growth phase. That means big opportunities, rapid decision-making, and the chance to shape something that’s scaling globally. You’ll be part of a team solving real-world production challenges, stabilizing and improving cloud systems used by customers every day.
What makes us different? We combine startup-to-growth energy with the backing of Gallagher — a global leader trusted for nearly 85 years across 100+ countries. You get the excitement of building and scaling something new, with the confidence that comes from proven reliability and resources.
Our purpose - Protect what matters most - shapes how we innovate, support farmers, and look after our people.
Why you’ll love this role
At eShepherd, your work matters from day one — you’ll be directly supporting live production systems used by real customers. This isn’t a role for observers; you’ll be rolling up your sleeves, solving problems, and shaping how our platform operates and scales.
You’ll get exposure to a broad set of technologies, collaborate globally, and grow your skills in a high-impact, fast-moving environment with:
Real impact from day one – Your fixes directly affect farmers, ranchers and operational teams.
Hands-on problem solving – Be the person who gets production back online and improves the platform.
Broad, challenging scope – Work across AWS cloud, dashboards, automation, and customer success workflows.
Autonomy & growth – Make decisions with incomplete information, learn the system deeply, and expand your responsibilities over time (while supported by our team as you get up to speed in the role).
Global collaboration – Partner with R&D teams in Australia and Customer Success teams across North America.
Startup energy, enterprise backing – Innovate in a high-growth environment with the support of 85+ years of Gallagher stability.
Who thrives here
The eShepherd team thrives when we bring on engineers who are curious, resourceful, and comfortable rolling up their sleeves in a fast-moving environment. If you enjoy tackling real-world production challenges, making decisions with incomplete information, and continuously learning, you’ll fit right in.
Successful candidates are:
Problem solvers – You thrive in ambiguity and enjoy troubleshooting live systems.
Hands-on doers – You can execute fixes immediately and iterate to long-term solutions.
Practical engineers – You prioritize solutions that work in production, not just designs that look good on paper.
Collaborators – You communicate effectively across time zones and teams.
Curious learners – You’re motivated to learn new technologies and processes on the fly.
What You’ll Own
This is a hands-on CloudOps role where you’ll be trusted to respond quickly, think on your feet, and take real ownership of live systems. When you join the business, you’ll get strong support to know how to operate. Once you’re operating independently, you’ll often be working with incomplete information, making decisions that directly impact production and customer experience - while collaborating closely with our Australian R&D team to turn short-term fixes into long-term improvements.
You’ll:
Provide first-line CloudOps support during US hours – respond to incidents, outages, and alerts.
Diagnose and troubleshoot AWS infrastructure (EC2, RDS, Lambda, S3, and networking).
Implement temporary fixes to restore service, then collaborate with AU R&D to develop permanent solutions.
Proactively improve dashboards, monitoring, and observability (Grafana, CloudWatch).
Support Customer Success by pulling operational data, improving processes, and resolving minor issues.
Contribute to Infrastructure as Code (Terraform), automation, CI/CD, and platform reliability initiatives.
What You’ll Bring
You’re someone who’s already built a solid foundation in CloudOps or infrastructure engineering and can step into a live environment with confidence. You’re practical, resourceful, and comfortable figuring things out as you go - without needing everything neatly defined upfront.
Must-have skills:
Proven production experience with AWS cloud services.
Familiarity with monitoring and observability tools (Grafana, CloudWatch, Prometheus).
Practical experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, CloudFormation).
Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
Comfort operating with incomplete information and learning quickly.
Nice -to-have skills:
CI/CD pipeline experience (GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins).
Exposure to IoT, distributed systems, or edge computing.
Experience supporting operational or customer-facing teams.
Interest in automation, data pipelines, or AI-enabled workflows.
Benefits We Offer
Competitive salary + performance-based incentives
Career growth as you gain deep system knowledge and take ownership of US cloud operations
Health, dental, and vision coverage
Life, accident, disability, and critical illness insurance
401(k) with employer contributions
Employee Assistance & Wellness Programs
Tools, tech, and support to do your best work
Collaborative team culture with startup energy and global impact
