The Opportunity
This role exists to help us better understand the future needs of farmers and ranchers - and how Gallagher should respond. Who should we be building for next - and why?
This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of livestock farming at a time of profound change. Farmers and ranchers face increasing pressure to produce more with less, managing rising costs, and responding to increasing environmental regulation.
At the same time, consumers are demanding greater visibility into how their food is produced, accelerating the need for transparency, traceability, and trust across the value chain.
In this role, you’ll work directly with producers on the ground, uncovering how these challenges are reshaping day-to-day decisions and long-term priorities. You’ll turn these insights into a clear vision of the future farm, which will inform data insights, digital solutions, product innovation, and the go-to-market strategy. It’s an opportunity to connect real-world needs with strategic impact, helping deliver solutions that are practical, relevant, and built for a rapidly evolving agricultural landscape.
This role is a fixed term contract for 6 months.
What You’ll Be Doing
You’ll lead a hands-on programme of customer and industry insight to uncover how farmers make decisions and where the greatest opportunities exist for new technology and data solutions.
This includes:
Leading customer insight work across farming and ranching systems
Designing and running in-depth interviews and market conversations
Building clear customer personas and decision-maker maps
Identifying unmet needs and emerging opportunities across the farming ecosystem
Testing value propositions, pricing expectations, and willingness to pay
Engaging with key industry influencers including vets, agronomists, consultants, and regulators
Translating insights into:
- Commercial models
- Pricing logic
- Go-to-market strategyDelivering clear, decision-ready recommendations to senior leadership
This role combines analysis, field engagement, and strategic synthesis, with travel across New Zealand and key international markets including the United States and Europe.
The Fit
This role will suit someone who is naturally curious about how farmers operate and motivated by uncovering the problems worth solving.
You’re comfortable starting with a broad question and working your way towards clarity — speaking directly with farmers, advisors, and industry influencers to understand how decisions are really made on farm. You enjoy digging beneath the surface, identifying patterns in behaviour, and translating insight into practical direction for product and commercial strategy.
Importantly, you’re not a purely theoretical strategist. You’re happy doing the work yourself — designing discussion guides, running interviews, synthesising insights, and shaping recommendations.
You may come from ag-tech, animal health, farming systems, or a related sector, and you’ve likely played a role in shaping or taking a product or data-driven solution to market.
You’re equally comfortable speaking with farmers in the field and presenting clear insights to senior leaders.
This role operates with a high degree of autonomy, so you’ll need to be comfortable structuring your own work and navigating a level of ambiguity as the insight programme evolves.
We are an office-first organisation, and while flexibility exists, this role benefits from being closely connected to our Hamilton-based team. International travel is also part of the role, giving you the chance to engage directly with farms and industry markets.

Proven experience delivering customer insight that informed real product or commercial decisions
Strong exposure to agriculture or farming systems (essential)
Experience engaging directly with farmers, advisors, or agricultural stakeholders
The ability to translate complex insight into clear commercial direction
Strong synthesis and storytelling skills
Comfort working independently in an exploratory environment
A pragmatic, curious mindset and willingness to get out into the field
